CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER SERVICE
This I.S. Note is being issued to clarify service procedures for the clutch master cylinder used on 1980-85 AMC Spirit, Concord, Eagle, and 1980-85
Jeep CJ and Cherokee/Wagoneer 70 Series models.
CLEANING
After disassembling the clutch master cylinder, prepare the unit for inspection by cleaning it with AMC/Jeep/Renault Brake Cleaner, 8982 200
043. Then dry the cylinder with compressed air.
INSPECTION
Inspect the cylinder bore for evidence of the following conditions:
^
nicks, scratches, scoring
^
corrosion, pitting, or roughness
^
cracks or porosity
^
excessive wear
Caution:
Do not attempt to repair a damaged clutch master cylinder bore by honing it. The cylinder bore must not be honed under any circumstances.
Replace the unit if the bore is damaged in any way.
OVERHAUL/REPLACEMENT
Overhaul the clutch master cylinder (reseal) only if the bore is clean and smooth. Light discoloration of the bore is acceptable but only if the bore is clean
and smooth.
Replace the clutch master cylinder if the bore is scratched, scored, nicked, corroded or pitted, or if excessively worn. Also replace the cylinder if the
body or bore is cracked or porous or if there is any doubt about the condition of the bore.
Caution:
Do not attempt to repair a damaged clutch master cylinder bore by honing it. The cylinder bore must not be honed under any circumstances.
Replace the unit if the bore is damaged in any way.
