Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
Installation
1.
Using suitable lubricant, lubricate support plate edges, anchor pin, self-adjusting cable guide adjuster screw threads, pivot, and parking brake cable
lever.
2.
Position brake shoes on support plate and install hold down springs.
3.
On rear brakes, install parking brake lever, then the parking brake cable on lever, and install strut and spring.
4.
Install adjuster cable end on anchor pin.
5.
Install primary return spring.
6.
Install cable guide and secondary return spring.
7.
Install adjusting screw assembly, then place small hooked end of adjuster spring in large hole in primary shoe and large hooked end in adjuster
lever.
8.
Place hooked end of adjuster cable over cable guide.
9.
Using suitable pliers, grasp adjuster lever and hook adjuster lever tang in large hole in bottom of secondary shoe.
10.
Set adjusting screws so that approximately 3/8 inch of thread is exposed between adjuster screw and adjuster screw nut.
11.
Install drums.
12.
If any hydraulic lines were opened, bleed brake system.
13.
Install wheel and tire assemblies and lower vehicle.
14.
Check master cylinder fluid level, filling as necessary.
15.
Check brake pedal for proper feel and return.
16.
Drive vehicle in reverse and forward, making 10 to 15 brake applications, alternating forward and reverse stops, then road test vehicle.
