SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some 1987-90 Comanches equipped with the 2.5L engine may experience a steering column vibration at idle. This vibration may be improved by
installing a steering wheel vibration dampener on vehicles equipped with a 2-spoke steering wheel.
NOTE:
THE VIBRATION DAMPENER CANNOT BE INSTALLED ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3-SPOKE (SPORT) STEERING
WHEEL. A 2-SPOKE STEERING WHEEL CAN BE INSTALLED ONLY WITH OWNER APPROVAL.
DIAGNOSIS
Allow the engine to reach normal operation temperature. Connect a tachometer to the engine ignition. Set parking brake and place transmission in
neutral. Start engine and verify the engine idle RPM is 700 + 50 RPM. If the idle RPM is in specification inspect the exhaust system and drivetrain for
any possible grounding condition. If no grounding conditions are found perform the following repair procedure.
If the engine RPM is below the idle specification, perform the Diagnosis/Repair Procedure outlined in Technical Service Bulletin 18-51-89, Low Idle
Speed Vibration, issued March 20, 1989.
