Two (2) types of valve springs and retainers are used in early 1988 2.5L and 4.0L engines. The Type I spring is a conical spring (cone shaped) 2 inches
[50.8 mm] long. Type II is a cylindrical spring (top and bottom coils are the same diameter) 1.82 inches long [46.2 mm].

The valve spring and retainer are not interchangeable. A letter "S" will be stamped on the engine block after the engine built date codes on engines built
with the Type II valve spring.
