Fuel Pump Ballast Resistor: Testing and Inspection

Fuel Pump Ballast Resistor

NOTE:  The fuel system wiring diagrams should be used in conjunction with the following test to correctly diagnose the problem.

1.

With the engine running, connect a voltmeter to the OR/BK input wire (circuit F22) on the ballast resistor, and check for voltage.  If voltage is
present, go to step 2.  If voltage is not present, go to step 3. 

2.

Shut the engine OFF, connect an ohmmeter across the two terminals of the ballast resistor, and check for continuity.  If continuity exists, the
ballast resistor is functioning properly and no further testing is required.  If continuity does not exist, replace the ballast resistor and retest.

3.

Connect a voltmeter to the OR/BK wire (circuit F22) of the oxygen sensor heater relay, and check for voltage.  If voltage is constantly present at
the OR/BK wire (circuit F22) of the oxygen sensor heater relay, the problem is computer related.    
If voltage is not present at the OR/BK wire (circuit F22) of the oxygen sensor heater relay, and not present at the OR/BK input wire (circuit F22)
on the ballast resistor, test the oxygen sensor heater relay.  

4.

If there is voltage at the OR/BK output wire (circuit F22) of the ballast resistor, and the fuel pump still does not operate, check the fuel pump
operation.
