Wheel Speed Sensor: Service and Repair

1.
Raise and support vehicle, then turn wheel outward to gain access to sensor.
2.
Remove tie straps from sensor wiring from steering knuckle and brake hose.
3.
Clean dirt and road splash from sensor and surrounding area. This is necessary to avoid sensor damage when removing.
4.
Remove bolt attaching sensor to steering knuckle, then sensor.
5.
Unseat grommet retaining sensor wire in wheelwell.
6.
From inside engine compartment, disconnect sensor wire connector from anti-lock harness plug. Remove sensor and wire.
7.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a.
On 1990-91 models, if sensor spacer strip is in good condition and securely attached, lightly press sensor against tone wheel and torque
attaching bolt to 11 ft. lbs.
b.
If sensor spacer strip is missing, loose or damaged and sensor contacts are exposed, wipe sensor contacts clean then set sensor air gap to
0.013-0.019 inch using a brass feeler gauge.
c.
On 1992 models, front air gap is not adjustable. When installing sensor ensure locating tab is seated in hole in knuckle. Air gap should be
between 0.0157-0.0510, if not replace sensor.
d.
On all models, torque attaching bolt to 11 ft. lbs.
