Axle Bearing: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1.
Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and brake caliper.
2.
Remove grease cap, cotter pin, nut retainer, adjusting nut and thrust washer from spindle.
3.
Remove outer wheel bearing from hub.
4.
Remove hub and rotor from spindle.
5.
Remove grease seal from hub and rotor, then the inner wheel bearing.
INSTALLATION
1.
Apply suitable grease in rotor hub cavity, then pack wheel bearings with grease.
2.
Install inner wheel bearing and new grease seal in rotor.
3.
Install hub and rotor on spindle.
4.
Install outer bearing, thrust washer and spindle nut. Tighten spindle nut to specifications while rotating rotor to seat bearing.
5.
Loosen spindle nut 1/2 turn while rotating wheel, then tighten spindle nut to specifications.
6.
Install nut retainer and cotter pin.
7.
Install grease cap, caliper and wheel.
4WD
REMOVAL
1.
Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel, brake caliper and rotor.
2.
Remove cotter pin, locknut, axle hub retaining nut and washer.
3.
Remove hub/carrier assembly to steering knuckle attaching bolts, disc brake rotor shield, then the hub/carrier assembly.
INSTALLATION
1.
Fill steering knuckle hub cavity with chassis grease, then install hub/carrier assembly. Tighten hub/carrier assembly to steering knuckle attaching
bolts to specifications.
2.
Install brake shield, washer and axle hub retaining nut, tighten retaining nut to specifications, then install locknut and cotter pin.
3.
Install rotor, caliper and wheel, then lower vehicle.
