Axle Bearing: Service and Repair
Rear Axle Service
Except Model 35 & 8-1/8 Axle

REMOVAL
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and brake drum.
2.
Working through holes in axle shaft flange, remove brake support plate attaching nuts.
3.
Using a suitable slide hammer type puller, remove axle shaft from housing.
DISASSEMBLY
1.
Position axle shaft in a vise.
2.
Drill a 1/4 inch hole approximately 3/4 of the way through bearing retaining ring, then chisel a deep groove in ring and remove from axle shaft.
3.
Using tool J-23674 or equivalent, press bearing from shaft.
4.
Remove seal, gasket and retainer plate from axle shaft.
ASSEMBLY
1.
Lubricate seal, then install retainer plate, gasket and seal onto axle shaft.
2.
Lubricate bearing, then using tool J-23674 or equivalent, and a suitable press, install bearing and retaining ring onto axle shaft. Ensure bearing and
ring are properly seated against axle shaft shoulder.
INSTALLATION
1.
Clean axle housing bearing bore, then apply a thin coat of grease to outer diameter of bearing cup.
2.
Install axle shaft, then alternately tighten brake support plate attaching nuts to specifications.
3.
Install brake drum and wheel, then lower vehicle.
