PCM - Engine Clatter on Cold Acceleration

SUBJECT:
Engine Noise During Acceleration - Cold Ambient Temperature

NOTE:

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4.0L ENGINE.

MODELS:

1993 (ZJ) Grand Cherokee

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Vehicle may exhibit an engine noise "Clatter" following cold engine starts at ambient temperature below (10°C) 50°F. This condition will only occur
with a soak of more than six hours, the engine coolant temperature is below (65°C) 150°F (approximately the first (three Km) two miles of cold engine
operation), with aggressive acceleration (approximately 3/4 throttle).

DIAGNOSIS:

Using the Scan Tool (DRB II) and the appropriate diagnostic procedure manual, verify that all the vehicle engine systems are functioning as designed. If
diagnostic trouble codes (message/fault codes) are present, record them on the repair order for future reference, and repair as necessary. If no diagnostic
trouble codes (messages/fault codes) are present and all systems are functioning correctly, proceed with the repair.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves replacement of the Powertrain Control Module (SBEC - Single Board Engine Controller) with a revised one.

1.

With the ignition key in the OFF position, disconnect the battery.

2.

Remove the Powertrain Control Module (SBEC - Single Board Engine Controller) as outlined in the appropriate service manual, and replace with
unit called out in "PARTS REQUIRED".

3.

Connect the battery.

4.

Type the required information on the Authorized Modification Label, see illustration, and attach near the VECI Label.

Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
