Tighten the locknut to 55 ft-lbs (75 N.m) using Special Tool # 6856 (Figure 13).

Rotate the fuel filter/fuel pressure regulator until its fitting is pointed to the 10 o'clock position (if necessary).
34.
Position the fuel tank on the hydraulic jack.
35.
Raise the tank into position.
36.
Install the seven fuel tank mounting nuts (Figures 11 and 12). Tighten the nuts to 141 in-lbs (16 N.m).
37.
Connect the fuel tank module electrical connector at the front of the fuel tank (Figure 10).
38.
Connect the fuel vapor hose to the fuel vapor tube (Figure 10).
39.
Connect the fuel hose to the fuel tank module (Figure 10).
40.
Secure the rear axle vent hose to the fuel filler hoses with the new tie strap.
41.
Install the rear wheel well splash shield using the provided push clips.
42.
Lower the vehicle.
43.
Install the fuel filler bezel (Figure 9). Tighten the eight screws securely.
44.
Refill the fuel tank and install the fuel filler cap.
45.
Reconnect the negative battery cable.

The fuel tank level sending unit on the above listed vehicles may cause the fuel gauge to display an inaccurate fuel level. To correct this condition the
fuel tank level sending unit must be replaced.

Effective immediately all repairs on involved vehicles are to be performed according to this Recall Notification. The Labor Operation Number for
TSB 08-19-97 Rev. A is being canceled. Vehicles that have had the TSB repair performed have been removed from this recall.

This recall will be launched in phases. Owners of Grand Cherokee (ZJ) and Cherokee (XJ) vehicles built through November 30, 1996 (MDH II
3OXX) will be notified initially.
Parts Packages:

Each involved dealer to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced will receive enough Sending Unit Packages to service about 25% of their Phase 1
vehicles.
