NO: 23-14-94
GROUP: Body
DATE: Feb. 18, 1994
SUBJECT:
Water Leaks At The Left Kick Panel And Dash Panel Areas
MODELS:
1993 - 1994 (ZJ) Grand Cherokee/Grand Wagoneer
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Vehicles built prior to 12/01/93, MDH 12-01-XX may leak water into the vehicle at the left kick panel and dash panel areas which collects under the
carpet in the driver's footwell and possibly under the rear seat footwell. The leakage may be the result of missing body sealer, improperly installed body
plugs and/or electrical wiring harness grommets.
DIAGNOSIS:
1.
If the carpet in the front or rear driver's side footwell is saturated through to the top surface of the carpet, go directly to the Repair Procedure. If the
carpet is dry on the top surface in the driver's footwell, continue on to Step 2 of this diagnosis.
2.
Remove the screws from the left side B-pillar lower trim (sill).
3.
Pull the carpet up off the floorpan and inspect the floorpan, the rubberized carpet backing, and the insulation for signs of moisture.
4.
Raise the rear seat bench and pull the carpet up and inspect for any signs of moisture in the footwell area.
5.
If there is any signs of moisture go to the repair procedure. Dry the carpet as necessary. If the carpet has been wet for a long period of time and it
smells like mildew, it may need to be replaced.
6.
If there are no signs of moisture, apply water to the following areas; the left cowl area just behind the left hand hinge, on the base of the left cowl
top-to-fender seam, and the left side of dash panel below the plenum. Inspect for water entry into the vehicle in the left kick panel and dash panel
area. If water enters the vehicle, go to the Repair Procedure. If no water enters the vehicle, install the carpet and trim. No further action is
necessary.
