Drift Left Under Hard Braking
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER 05-14-93. PLEASE MAKE NOTE TO REFER TO THIS
BULLETIN WHEN THESE SYMPTOMS ARE ENCOUNTERED. THIS BULLETIN IS BEING REVISED TO INCLUDE 1995 MODELS, AND
ADDS A PROCEDURE TO ADJUST REAR DRUM BRAKES ON VEHICLES SO EQUIPPED.
MODELS:
1992 -** 1995** (XJ) Cherokee
1993 -** 1995** (ZJ) Grand Cherokee/Grand Wagoneer
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A drift to the left condition may occur during hard brake applications short of anti-lock operation. This condition will only be evident with warm brakes.
The steering wheel will remain in the straight ahead position when the condition occurs. The condition is caused by a change in the front steering
geometry due to high loads imposed during hard braking and will occur only in the left direction. A vehicle that moves to the right during braking does
not fit the condition this bulletin is addressing. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO APPLY THIS PROCEDURE TO CORRECT A VEHICLE THAT DRIFTS
RIGHT, OR IF THE STEERING WHEEL MOVES DURING THE DRIFT.
DIAGNOSIS:
1.
Check and adjust tire pressures.
2.
Check the front suspension for loose, worn or damaged components.
3.
Check the front brakes for any signs of abnormal wear.
4.
On vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes, check the park brake cable adjustment and adjust as required.
**5. Adjust the rear drum brakes using the brake gauge shown. Expand the gauge to contact the drum and lock it in position. Reverse the gauge and
place it on the shoes as shown. Adjust the star wheel until the shoes contact the gauge and are at a light drag fit.**
**6. Repeat this procedure for the other side.**

Remove the bolts that hold the steering gear to the frame. Lower the gear enough to inspect the steering shaft coupler. Make sure that the flat on
the shaft aligns with the coupler. If the steering gear shaft is not aligned with the steering column, the steering gear will not be centered in the
straight ahead position. This can cause a drift in either direction under braking or while driving without the brakes applied.
8.
Check to make sure that the steering wheel is centered. If the wheel is not centered, correct that condition first.
9.
Perform a thorough road test in an isolated area. Make sure that the brakes are warm by performing 5 consecutive stops from 45 MPH using
medium brake applications. Stop the vehicle from 55 MPH using hard pedal application, but not hard enough to slip a wheel. If a wheel slips, the
ABS will engage. Hold light pressure on the steering wheel and note if the wheel tries to turn. If the steering wheel turns, there may be a brake
related problem and this procedure will not correct the condition.
10.
If the vehicle exhibits this condition, perform the following repair procedure.
