Excessive Cooling Fan Cycling

NOTE:

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 5.2L ENGINE AND BUILT PRIOR TO MDH 11-01-XX.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Excessively long or frequent cooling fan cycling.

DISCUSSION:

Fan noise will be present when the fan drive (viscous coupling) is engaged. A new fan drive has been designed which will reduce fan noise in two ways.
First, the temperature at which the fan drive engages has been raised. This will reduce the frequency of the fan engaging without effecting cooling system
performance. Second, the internal plate which allows fluid to pass from one portion of the drive to another has been redesigned. This lessens the
likelihood of a fluid drain back condition which causes the drive to engage briefly the first time the engine is started after it has been sitting for a period
of time.

It is also important to seal the area between the radiator and the A/C condenser. Seals must be present at the sides of the condenser to prevent hot engine
compartment air from being recirculated through the radiator or condenser for proper cooling system and A/C performance.

If excessive fan cycling complaints are received, perform the repair procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves inspecting the vehicle for the presence of the radiator to condenser seals and installing a fan drive.

1.

Inspect for the presence of the radiator to condenser seal. If the seals are not present, install P/N 52027509 by removing the protective tape from
the adhesive and applying the seal to each side of the condenser.

2.

Using the procedures outlined in the appropriate Service Manual, install the new fan drive listed above.

3.

Start the engine and operate it at 2000 RPM for 2 minutes to pump fluid into the new fan drive.
