New Evaporative Canister Inlet Filter For Use In Severe Debris Environments
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves the installation of an in-line filter to the evaporative canister inlet hose.
MODELS:
2002 - 2004 (WG) Grand Cherokee (International Market)
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to gasoline fuel vehicles built prior to December 01, 2003 (1201XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
In severe road environments, where high sand or other foreign debris content may be of concern, the inlet hose to the evaporative canister may become
partially or completely restricted. The restriction may cause a vacuum to occur in the evaporative and fuel system. If sufficient, the vacuum may lead to
longer engine start times due to a loss of fuel prime at the fuel tank module.
DIAGNOSIS:
1.
Inspect the evaporative canister and its air inlet hose for evidence of packing from sand and/or other debris.
2.
If either the inlet hose or the evaporative canister are restricted, they must be cleaned of debris or replaced before proceeding with this bulletin.
3.
If frequent restriction of the evaporative canister inlet due to sand or other debris is expected for the environment that the vehicle is being operated
in, then perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1.
Raise the vehicle on a suitable frame lift.
2.
Remove the rear bumper fascia by first removing the four (4) plastic push pins and two (2) screws in the lift gate opening. Remove the remaining
four (4) plastic push pins at the bottom of the fascia.
3.
At each rear wheel well opening remove the three (3) plastic rivets and 10 mm nut used to secure the fascia to the vehicle quarter panel.
4.
Release each large plastic retainer used to secure the sides of the fascia to each quarter panel. Use a long narrow trim stick positioned between the
fascia and the quarter panel to release the tabs on each large plastic retainer. Remove the fascia from the vehicle. If necessary, refer to the
appropriate Service Manual for detailed fascia removal instructions.
5.
Locate the inlet hose for the evaporative canister (left quarter panel area). Locate the fresh air end/opening of the inlet hose where the plastic end
cap has been installed. From the hose opening (end cap) follow the vertical section of the inlet hose down to where the inlet hose makes a 90° bend
(radius) to the horizontal. Make a mark on the horizontal section of the inlet hose 25 mm (1 in.) after the 90° bend. Make a second mark on the
horizontal section of the inlet hose 95 mm (3.75 in.) to the right (rearward) of the first mark.
