Difficult To Remove Wheel Assembly From Hub
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO THE 1993 GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED MODELS.
MODELS:
1993 (ZJ) Grand Cherokee
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some Grand Cherokee Limited models built prior to MDH 05-01-XX may have a binding condition between the rear wheel and the axle hub flange. This
condition is caused by a slightly oversized rear wheel axle hub flange and/or undersized wheel pilot hole diameter.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This repair procedure involves inspecting and correcting the wheel-to-hub fit on all aluminum wheels and the rear wheel axle hub and/or undersized
wheel pilot hole.
1.
Remove both rear tire and wheel assemblies.
2.
If paint is present around the hub flange, remove it using 120 grit sandpaper, see illustration.
3.
To enlarge the hole in the wheel, wrap a piece of 120 grit paper around a cylindrical shaped object (i.e. hammer handle or piece of pipe) smaller
than the hole in wheel. Sand the hole in the wheel using a circular motion sanding firmly and evenly for five to ten revolutions.
4.
Install the tire and wheel assemblies using two lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts to 50 ft.lbs. (68 N-m) torque.
5.
Remove the lug nuts. If the wheel still binds and requires abnormal effort to remove it, repeat Step 3, using five revolutions when sanding the hole
in the wheel and then repeat Steps 4 and 5.
6.
Remove the front tires and wheels and the spare tire and wheel if it is a full sized tire with the aluminum wheel, Perform Steps 3 thru 5 using the
rear axle hub to gage the tire and wheel assembly clearance (remove one rear tire and wheel assembly). The binding condition will not be obvious
on the front spindle assemblies.
7.
If either of the front wheels or spare wheel still bind or require abnormal effort to remove, perform Steps 3 thru 5 again. Use the rear axle hub
assembly to verify the clearance, 8. Install all the tire and wheel assemblies in the original locations. Tighten the lug nuts to 95 ft.lbs. (129 N-m)
torque.
