Shift Cable Buzz/Whine
Note:
This bulletin supersedes Technical Service Bulletin 21-07-94 Rev. A, dated Oct. 21, 1994 which should be removed from your files. A shield has
been developed to protect the Crankshaft Position Sensor. This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with 4.0L engines. Changes are shown with
asterisks.
MODELS:
1993 - 1994 (ZJ) Grand Cherokee/Grand Wagoneer
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Buzzing or whining noise transmitted into the instrument panel area by the shift cable. The noise may seem to sound like transmission front pump
buzz/whine.
DIAGNOSIS:
Inspect the shift cable routing and part number. If the cable comes into contact with the engine crankshaft position sensor or bell housing, or if the cable
is not P/N 52079230, perform the repair procedure. This cable can be identified by the presence of a protective sleeve (See Illustration).

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves replacing the current shift cable with a revised shift cable and installing a shield to protect the crankshaft position sensor.
1.
Shift transmission into park.
2.
Raise the vehicle.
3.
Release cable adjuster clamp (at transmission end of cable) to unlock cable.
4.
Release cable from shift lever and unsnap cable from cable bracket. Discard old cable.
