Brake Shoe: Adjustments

Two different rear drum brake designs are used. They are similar in construction and operation but differ in method of automatic adjustment. Rear drum
brakes on Wrangler models have cable operated automatic adjusters while rear drum brakes on Grand Wagoneer J-10 and 20 Truck models have linkage
operated automatic adjusters. If the rear brakes are serviced, an initial adjustment must be performed before installing brake drums.

Remove access slot covers from brake support plates.

2.

Using brake adjusting tool, rotate adjusting screw clockwise direction until brakes are locked.

Rotate brake adjuster screw counterclockwise until wheel turns freely. The automatic adjuster lever must be disengaged from the adjuster screw
before screw can be turned.

4.

Road test vehicle and apply 10-15 firm stops in reverse, applying one forward stop between each reverse stop to equalize adjustment.
