Starter Solenoid: Testing and Inspection
Motorcraft Starters

Solenoid Ground Test

1.

Connect one ohmmeter test probe to battery negative post and other probe to sheet metal adjacent to solenoid on manual transmission, or ground
terminal on automatic transmission, and note resistance.

2.

Move test probe to solenoid S terminal. If resistance increases by more than 5 ohms, check solenoid ground.

Solenoid Pull-In Coil Winding Test

1.

Disconnect S terminal wire from solenoid.

2.

Connect ohmmeter leads to S terminal and the mounting bracket on manual transmission, or ground terminal on automatic transmission.

3.

If there is no continuity, replace solenoid.

Solenoid Contact Point Test

1.

Using ohmmeter, test resistance through solder joint.

2.

If resistance is more than zero ohms, resolder joint using 600 watt soldering iron.
