Steering Wheel: Service and Repair
Some steering shafts have metric steering wheel nut threads. Check and identify shaft thread type before installing a replacement steering wheel nut.
Metric steering shafts have an identifying groove in the steering wheel splines.
1.
Disconnect battery negative.
2.
On models equipped with a standard steering wheel, remove trim cover attaching screws from the underside of the wheel and remove the
cover.
3.
If equipped with a sport wheel, remove horn button by pulling it outward.
4.
On models equipped with a standard steering wheel, disconnect the horn wire connectors from the contact switch.
5.
If equipped with a sport wheel, remove the horn contact mechanism and the flexplate from the steering wheel.
6.
Remove the steering wheel retaining nut and the vibration dampener, if equipped. Inspect for alignment marks on the steering shaft and the
steering wheel. Paint alignment marks on the steering shaft and the wheel (if none exist) for installation reference.
7.
Remove the steering wheel with an appropriate puller tool.
8.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque steering wheel retaining nut to 25 ft. lbs.
