Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Models Less Selec-Trac
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove disc brake caliper(s).
3. On models less front hubs, remove rotor hub cap, then the axle shaft snap ring, drive gear, pressure spring and spring retainer.
4. On models with front hubs, proceed as follows:
a.
Remove socket head screws from hub body, then remove the body and large retaining ring.
b.
Remove small retaining ring from axle shaft.
c.
Remove hub clutch assembly from axle.
5. On all models, remove outer locknut, washer and inner locknut.
6. Remove rotor. The spring retainer and outer bearing are removed with the rotor.
7. Remove nuts and bolts attaching spindle and support shield and remove spindle and shield, tapping spindle with suitable mallet as necessary to
remove it from knuckle.
8. Remove axle shaft.
9. Reverse procedure to install. Torque inner wheel bearing adjusting nut to 50 ft. lbs. while rotating wheel to seat bearings, then back off nut 1/6
turn. Turn inner adjusting locknut until peg engages nearest hole in lockwasher. Install outer locknut and torque to 50 ft. lbs. Torque socket head
screws to 30 inch lbs. Install spring retainer with cupped side facing toward center of vehicle.
