Liberty 4WD L4-2.8L DSL Turbo VIN 5 (2006)
A. Vehicle Inspection
1.
If the Malfunction Indicator Lamp is set, retrieve the vehicle DTC's as follows:
a.
Connect the CH9404 StarSCAN vehicle cable to the StarSCAN and the vehicle.
b.
From the "Home" screen, select "System View".
c.
Record all DTC's as shown.
2.
Perform the torque converter test as follows:
a.
Place the transmission selector in PARK (or NEUTRAL).
b.
Apply the parking brakes.
c.
Start the engine.
d.
Step outside of the vehicle and listen for any unusual noise from the torque converter area.
3.
Based on the results noted in Step 2, if the vehicle exhibits one or both of the following issues, continue to Section C - Transmission Flush, Torque
Converter and Pump Replacement. Very few vehicles are expected to require this repair to be performed.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is illuminated with a DTC code of P0740.
>
The torque converter exhibits a rattle like noise in neutral or park.
4.
If the vehicle exhibits neither of the issues listed in Step 3, continue with Section B - Torque Converter Replacement.
B. Torque Converter Replacement
1.
Open the hood.
2.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
NOTE:
To enhance customer satisfaction, remember to reset the clock when you have completed the service procedure.
3.
Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist.
4.
Remove the skid plates.
5.
Paint-mark the transmission and transfer case propeller shafts at the axle companion flanges. The paint marks will be used for assembly alignment.
6.
Remove the rear propeller shaft.
7.
Remove the front propeller shaft.
8.
Disconnect the output speed sensor electrical connector from the transmission.
9.
Disconnect the input speed sensor electrical connector from the transmission.
10.
Disconnect the transmission solenoid/TRS assembly electrical connector from the transmission.
11.
Disconnect the line pressure sensor electrical connector from the transmission.
