OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves information to prevent radio antenna breakage.

DISCUSSION:

The customer may complain of a broken radio antenna. This discussion is limited to a break in the antenna that occurs just above or at the threaded
section of the antenna mast. The cause of this condition may be due to an antenna that is not fully seated to its vehicle mounted antenna body.

A common cause of breakage on or near the threaded section of an antenna is incomplete installation of the antenna during Pre-Delivery. The threads on
the antenna have a thread-lock material applied to them. The thread-lock material can cause a new antenna from fully seating, if it is tightened only by
hand (without a wrench).

NOTE:

TIGHTENING THE ANTENNA BY HAND ONLY IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. THE ANTENNA MUST BE FULLY SEATED. TIGHTEN THE
ANTENNA TO 5.7 NM (50 IN.LBS.). VERIFY THAT THE ANTENNA IS FULLY SEATED TO THE ANTENNA BASE. MOST IMPORTANT,
THERE SHOULD BE NO GAPS (SPACE) BETWEEN THE BASE OF THE ANTENNA AND THE ANTENNA BODY THAT IT SCREWS
INTO.

A limited number of Liberty vehicles were built with an antenna that was painted black in color. In a few cases, it has been found that an excess amount
of paint may accumulate at the antenna base. When the antenna is tightened, this excess paint may crack and eventually break loose from the antenna.
This may allow a gap to occur between the base of the antenna and the antenna body. The painted antenna was replaced very early in production with an
all stainless steel (no paint) antenna.
