NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a manual transmission (sales code DDD or DDK).

DISCUSSION:

Excessive clutch slipping is indicated by the clutch disc facing overheating, and flywheel and clutch cover (pressure plate) surfaces heavily glazed.
Under conditions of extreme heat (blue discoloration of the metal), the clutch cover diaphragm spring could lose clamp load (causing disc to slip) and
cause a repeat failure if not replaced. Also, flywheel damage, including severe heat checking (minor cracking) of the friction surface, andlor structural
cracking could result.

In cases where extreme heat is evident, it is important to perform the following steps in addition to the acUons called out in the service manual.

1. Always replace the clutch cover when extreme heat build up is evident.

2. After lightly scuffing and cleaning the flywheel as instructed in the Service Manual, inspect the flywheel for evidence of structural cracking,

especially around the clutch cover attaching bolt holes and in the friction surface area (other than normal heat checking). If in doubt about the extent
of damage, replace the flywheel.

CAUTION:Do not attempt to machine a dual mass flywheel. Only light scuffing and cleaning as described above is permitted. Excessive stock removal

can result in the flywheel cracking or warping after installation; it can also weaken the flywheel and interfere with proper clutch engagement.

3. Alert the customer to operating tips noted in the owner's manual, under Starting and Operating - Transmission Shifting, that could cause clutch

damage.
