Fuel Gauge Sender: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the fuel tank to service the fuel pump/sender unit.
1.
Remove the fuel filler cap to relieve any fuel tank pressure.
2.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3.
Drain the fuel tank until the gauge read less than 1/4 full using a portable gasoline storage/siphon tank, or appropriate substitute. Raise and
support the vehicle.

Disconnect the fuel vent, supply, and return hoses from their connections on the fuel pump/sender unit. Disconnect the fuel pump/sender electrical
connections from the main harness.

Using a hammer, and brass punch, remove the fuel pump/sender lock ring by tapping it in a counterclockwise direction. Remove the fuel pump
lock ring, and the pump/sender assembly.
6.
Remove and discard the fuel pump "O" ring seal, and the fuel pump sock style inlet filter.
