Models:
1990 Model Year Jeep Cherokee (XJ), Comanche (MJ) and Wrangler (YJ) With a 2.5L Engine and California Emission Control System, Vehicles Built
Before October 1, 1989
The listed vehicles may be in violation of California Emissions Standards as a result of catalyst deterioration. To correct the condition, a modified
catalytic converter must be installed.
Vehicles identified through our warranty records which have already received a modified catalytic converter have been excluded from the recall
population.
Important:
This recall is subject to the new state of California Registration Renewal/Emissions Recall Enforcement Program, which will be implemented in early
1992. After the implementation date, involved vehicles must have the recall service completed before registration renewal.
The servicing dealer must provide a Vehicle Emission Recall Proof of Correction Form (Form No. 81-016-1053) to each owner upon completion of the
recall service, for use as proof in renewal of the vehicle registration. Blank forms have been supplied separately to all California dealers by Compak Mail
for this purpose.
In addition, dealers must ensure that required parts are on hand at the time of the recall service appointment to prevent parts-related registration delays.

Note:
No videotape of the service procedure will be provided for this recall.
Vehicle List
Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive a vehicle list with this letter arranged in
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of
involved vehicles.
Each Jeep/Eagle dealer without a Vehicle List will receive an information copy of this letter by Compak Mail for use in performing the service on any
involved transient vehicles.
Recall Completion Label Requirement
There is a California Air Resources Board requirement to affix a label to the vehicle to certify that the emissions recall was completed. A label is
included in each parts package. Refer to the Service Procedure of this letter for application instructions.
Parts
Important:
A limited quantity of catalytic converter packages will be distributed initially and billed to all involved dealers. This quantity will cover a portion of
the total vehicles involved. Additional parts may be ordered as needed to support customer demand.
Each involved dealer, to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location), will receive enough catalytic converter
packages, Recall PN C3940444, to service 25% of those vehicles.
