THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 11-51-90, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THE
MODEL YEARS HAVE BEEN CHANGED AND A NEW EXHAUST MANIFOLD GASKET PART NUMBER HAS BEEN ISSUED. ALL
REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH >>ARROWS<<

DISCUSSION:

If an exhaust manifold and/or manifold gasket leak condition is encountered on a Cherokee/Wagoneer or Comanche vehicle equipped with a 4.OL
engine, be advised that a new >>exhaust manifold<<, exhaust manifold gasket, and new installation procedures have been released for service.

Before replacing an exhaust manifold, verify that the manifold, and not the manifold gasket, is the source of the complaint. The exhaust manifold gasket
may be blown out at one of the exhaust ports. If the gasket is the only leak, do not replace the exhaust manifold. Replace the gasket only and be sure to
follow the torque sequence outlined in the repair procedure below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This procedure involves the replacement of the exhaust manifold and gasket.

1.

Using the procedures outlined in the appropriate Jeep Service Manual, remove the intake and exhaust manifolds from the engine.

2.

Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and the intake manifold.

3.

Loosely assemble the new exhaust manifold, intake manifold and EGR tube on the bench.

4.

Install a new exhaust/intake manifold gasket (>>53020122<<) and the exhaust manifold/intake manifold/EGR tube assembly over the alignment
dowels on the cylinder head.
