Power Steering System - Low Pitched Noise/Moan

Power Steering Noise

MODELS:

1988-1991 (XJ) CHEROKEE WITH 4.0 LITER ENGINE

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some 1988-1991 XJ vehicles with the 4.0 liter engine may experience power steering noise.

The following are some power steering noise symptoms with repair procedures.

POWER STEERING PUMP "MOAN"

A low pitched sound, caused by the pump. It is usually noticed when driving at slow speeds and making turns, such as in parking maneuvers, (a slight
amount of moan is normal at the travel stop as the power steering pump goes into pressure relief).

DIAGNOSIS:

Start engine and turn off all accessories. Turn steering wheel left to right with the vehicle in PARK and brakes applied. A low pitch moaning sound will
be heard as if it were coming through the engine compartment bulkhead but not through the steering wheel. It is important to distinguish power steering
pump "moan" from steering gear "hiss".

NOTE:

ENGINE RPM SHOULD NOT EXCEED 1200 RPM WHEN CHECKING FOR POWER STEERING PUMP MOAN.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves replacing the power steering pressure hose with a revised design and/or power steering pump.

1.

Replace the power steering pressure hose. Refer to appropriate service manual for removal and installation procedures.

2.

Refill power steering fluid to specifications.

3.

Start and run engine for 3 minutes while cycling the steering left to right but avoiding the pressure relief stops. This is necessary to bleed the air
from the system.

NOTE:

Air in the System will cause a higher level of moan. Several warm up and cool down cycles may be necessary before all of the air is out
of the system.

4.

If "moan" is still prevalent, replace power steering pump. Refer to appropriate service manual for removal and installation procedures.

STEERING GEAR "SQUAWK"

A short, very loud rasping noise, that sounds like metal scrapping the underside of the vehicle. This can only occur during a left turn.

DIAGNOSIS:

Drive the vehicle in a parking lot, marking left and right turns. The noise, if it exists, will be a loud squawk and vibration which reverberates through the
body sheet metal structure during left turns. The noise is more prevalent with a fully warmed system.
