Suspension Spring ( Coil / Leaf ): Service and Repair
Leaf Spring Replacement
1.
Raise vehicle and support at side sills.
2.
Position with a suitable jack under axle assembly, then raise jack slightly to relieve tension.
3.
Disconnect shock absorber at lower mount, then remove wheel.
4.
On Cherokee and Wagoneer, proceed as follows:
a.
Disconnect stabilizer bar from spring plate.
b.
Remove U-bolt attaching nuts, then the U-bolts and spring plate.
c.
Remove front and rear spring eye to bracket retaining nuts and bolts, then lower axle and remove spring from vehicle.
5.
On Comanche, proceed as follows:
a.
Remove two spring plate U-bolts, then the spring plate.
b.
Remove rear eye-to-spring shackle bolt and front eye-to-bracket bolt.
c.
Remove spring from vehicle.
6.
On all models, to replace bushing, position spring on an arbor press and press bushing from spring using a suitable rod or pipe.
7.
Reverse procedure to install. Tighten U-bolt attaching nuts and front and rear spring eye retaining nuts to specifications.
