SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Under certain cold ambient conditions, some 1984-89 Jeep XJ and MJ vehicles may exhibit a noise in the suspension (bottoming out) that might be
mis-diagnosed as fatigued front and/or rear springs.
DIAGNOSIS
In cold ambients, the suspension jounce bumper material becomes hard. During normal driving over rough surfaces the jounce bumpers contact the axles
and may produce a bumping/ banging noise. The jounce bumper material has been changed to prevent this condition in cold temperatures.
Use the following parts and procedure to correct a cold weather suspension bump/bang condition.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
The following repair procedure involves replacing the front and/or rear suspension jounce bumpers.
FRONT
1.
Remove the front coil springs as outlined in the appropriate Service Manuals (M.R. 244, 277 or the 1989 Jeep Service Manual).
NOTE:
APPLY A SMALL AMOUNT OF LOCTITE 242 (P/N 83505630) TO THE THREADS OF THE REPLACEMENT
FRONT SUSPENSION JOUNCE BUMPERS.
2.
With the springs removed, replace the front suspension jounce bumpers and reinstall the coil springs.
REAR
1.
Remove the rear jounce bumper retaining bolts and remove the bumpers.
2.
Install the replacement bumpers and tighten the retaining bolts to 20 N-m (15 ft.lbs.) of torque.
