Models:
1988 Model Year Jeep Comanche (MJ-Body), Cherokee and Wagoneer (XJBody) Equipped With a 4.0L Engine and California Emission Control
System
The listed vehicles may exceed the allowable limits for oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) permitted by California Emissions Standards. In addition, the exhaust
manifold may produce an exhaust leak noise due to a crack. To correct the conditions, the oxygen sensor must be replaced with an improved sensor and
the exhaust manifold must be checked for an audible leak and replaced as necessary.
Important:
This recall is subject to the new State of California Registration Renewal/Emissions Recall Enforcement Program implemented in 1992. Since involved
vehicles must have the recall service completed before registration renewal, dealers should provide prompt service to prevent possible registration
delays.
The servicing dealer must provide a Vehicle Emission Recall Proof of Correction Form (Form No. 81-016-1053) to each owner upon completion of the
recall service, for use as proof in renewal of the vehicle registration. Blank forms have been supplied separately to all California dealers by Compak Mail
for this purpose.

Note:
As an additional service aid, a videotape demonstrating the service procedure is being distributed separately to each California Jeep/Eagle dealer at the
same time that this dealer recall notification letter is mailed.
Vehicle List
Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive a vehicle list with this letter arranged in
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of
involved vehicles.
Each Jeep/Eagle dealer without a Vehicle List will receive an information copy of this letter by Compak Mail for use in performing the service on any
involved vehicles as necessary.
Recall Completion Label Requirement
There is a California Air Resources Board requirement to affix a label to the vehicle to certify that the emissions recall was completed. A label is
included in each emissions service parts package. Refer to the Service Procedure of this letter for application instructions.
Parts
Important:
A quantity of parts will be distributed initially and billed to all involved dealers. This quantity will cover a portion of the total vehicles involved.
Additional parts may be ordered as needed to support customer demand.
Each involved dealer to whom vehicles in the recall were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location), will receive enough emissions service
packages and exhaust manifold packages at dealer cost to service 25% of those vehicles.
Each Emissions Service Package, Recall PN C3940453, contains an oxygen sensor and a recall completion label. Also included in each package is an
instruction summary for convenient reference by the servicing technician.
Each Exhaust Manifold Package, Recall PN C3940452, contains an exhaust manifold, attachment components and required fuel hose connection kits.
Additional parts may be ordered as needed.
