Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
Sync Signal Generator And Pulse Ring
Sync Signal Generator Operation
The Sync Pulse Generator works in conjunction with the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) to provide the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) with engine
speed and firing order information. The pulse ring and sync pulse generator are located in the distributor housing. As the leading edge of the pulse ring
rotates past the pulse generator a change in the magnetic field is monitored by the ECU. This indicates the position of piston number one. When the
distributor shaft has continued rotating for 180° the trailing edge of the pulse ring passes the sync generator indicating to the ECU the position of number
six cylinder.
