Differential Axle Housing: Service and Repair
Front Axle Service
Axle Housing Assembly Replace
The axle code number is attached to a tag located on the differential housing cover.
1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Remove tire/wheel assemblies, then the brake calipers and rotors.
3.
If equipped, disconnect vacuum harness from shift motor and vent hose from axle housing.
4.
Disconnect stabilizer bar, rod and center links, then the front propeller shaft, shock absorbers, steering damper and track bar from axle.
5.
If equipped, remove ABS brake sensor.
6.
Position a suitable jack under axle, if equipped, scribe alignment marks on suspension arm cam adjusters, then disconnect upper and lower control
arms at axle.
7.
Carefully lower axle housing and remove from vehicle.
8.
Reverse procedure to install. tighten upper control arm attaching bolts to specifications, lower control arm attaching bolts to specifications,
stabilizer bar link to specifications, and steering damper and track bar attaching nuts to specifications. When installing if equipped, vent hose,
secure hose away from the steering shaft U-joint.
Axle Tube Bearing (4WD Models)
1.
Remove intermediate shaft as previously outlined.
2.
Insert tools J-34659-3 and 4 or equivalents through outer end of axle tube, then working from access hole in shift motor housing, connect tool
J-34659-1 to tools previously mentioned.
3.
Position remover tool behind bearing, then tighten nut and remove bearing through access hole in shift motor housing.
4.
Position new bearing into housing, then drive bearing into position using tool J-34659-2.
5.
Install intermediate shaft.
