SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some 1988 Jeep Comanche, Cherokee, and Wagoneer built between 01-20-88 and 06-23-88 equipped with front axle disconnect system, may experience
a knocking/clicking noise at road speeds between 25 and 65 mph in the 2WD mode only. This noise condition is the result of machining tool marks at the
differential end of the intermediate axle shaft.
DIAGNOSIS
Road test with the vehicle in the 2WD mode. The noise condition is most prevalent during a light throttle tip-in/tip-out while the driveline is in a float
(no load) condition at road speed between 25 to 65 mph. The noise condition may also be experienced during a right turn.
Shift the transfer case into the 4WD mode and repeat road test. If the noise condition is no longer present perform the following repair procedure.
