M/T - New Shift Lever Installation Tool

NEW SHIFT LEVER INSTALLATION TOOL

A shift lever installation tool is now available for Jeep models with an AX4-5 or BA 10/5 manual transmission.

Gear Box Assembly

The new tool simplifies installation and ensures positive seating of the shift lever (A) on the stub lever (B).

Use the tool as follows:

1.

Apply a generous amount of liquid soap to the inside of the shift lever insulator (A).

2.

Position the shift lever on the transmission stub shaft (B).

3.

Apply a small amount of grease to the tool threads.

4.

Install tool J-36044 as shown. Tool may be installed from the front or rear. Verify that the lower shoe plate (D) is properly secured to the stub
shaft.

NOTE:

On some shift levers, it may be necessary to reverse the top plate (E) of tool J-36044.

5.

Turn the screw until the shift lever is in locked position on the stub shaft. The four dimples on the inside of the shift lever must seat in the
groove near the top of the stub shaft. The screw on the tool will become noticeably easier to turn when the dimples seat into the lock groove.
Do not install the shift lever too far down on the stub shaft. There should be approximately 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) of stub shaft exposed when
the shift lever is properly installed.

6.

Remove tool J-36044 and install the outer shift lever boot.

NOTE:

In some cases it may be necessary to file (dress) the four edges at the top of the stub shaft to ease installation.
