Wheel Speed Sensor: Service and Repair
Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement
Front
1.
Raise and support vehicle and turn wheel outward sensor access.
2.
Remove sensor wire from mounting brackets.
3.
Clean sensor and surrounding area then remove sensor securing bolt.
4.
Remove sensor then unseat grommet retaining sensor wire in wheelhouse panel.
5.
Disconnect sensor wire connector then remove sensor and wire.
6.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply Loctite Lock N' Seal No. 242 to bolt that attaches sensor to steering knuckle.
b. Torque sensor bolt to 11 ft. lbs.
Rear
1.
On Cherokee models with single connector, proceed as follows:
a. Raise and fold rear seat forward for access to rear sensor connectors.
b. Disconnect sensor at rear harness connector.
c. Push sensor grommets and sensor wire through floorpan.
2.
On all models, raise and support vehicle.
3.
Disconnect sensor wires at rear axle connectors.
4.
Remove wheel and brake drum.
5.
Remove clips securing sensor wire to brake and hoses lines or rear axle.
6.
Unseat sensor support plate grommet and remove sensor bolt, bracket and sensor assembly.
7.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply Loctite Lock N' Seal No. 242 to bolt that attaches sensor to steering knuckle.
b. If original sensor is used, adjust air gap to 0.043 inch with brass feeler gauge. Torque sensor bolt to 11 ft. lbs.
c. If a new sensor is installed, push cardboard spacer on sensor face onto tone ring. Torque sensor bolt to 6 ft. lbs.
