Clutch Slave Cylinder: Service and Repair
Slave Cylinder, Replace
NOTE: This combination concentric (throwout) bearing/slave cylinder is serviced as an assembly only. The bearing is permanently attached to the
cylinder piston and the hydraulic lines are permanently attached to the cylinder. If either the cylinder, bearing or lines become damaged, the entire
assembly must be replaced.
REMOVAL
1. Shift transmission into first or third gear, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Support engine with adjustable jack stand, then disconnect necessary exhaust system components.
3. Disconnect rear transmission mount and bracket from transmission, then remove skid plate or rear crossmember.
4. Disconnect transfer case shift linkage, vehicle speed sensor wires, vent hose and speedometer cable if equipped.
5. Disconnect clutch hydraulic lines.
6. Disconnect transmission shift lever as follows:
a. Lower transmission/transfer case assembly approximately 3 inches for access to shift lever.
b.
On AX-4, AX-5 or AX-15 transmissions remove the 4 retaining bolts around shift tower.
c.
Remove the 3 retaining bolts on BA-5 transmission.
d.
Lift lever and shift tower out of transmission.
e.
It is not necessary to remove shift lever from floorpan boot. Leave lever in position for later installation.
7. Mark front and rear propeller shafts for installation alignment, then remove shafts.
8. Remove crankshaft position sensor, if equipped.

9. Disconnect hydraulic line at quick disconnect fitting. Push round disc inward to unsnap and separate fittings.
10. Support transmission/transfer case with suitable jack, then install safety chains.
11. Remove clutch housing brace rod.
12. Remove clutch housing to engine bolts, then remove transmission/transfer case assembly, and lower.

13. Remove bolts attaching slave cylinder fluid line bracket to clutch housing, then remove insulator and bracket.
14. Remove cylinder and bearing retaining nut from mounting pin on transmission front case.
