DISCUSSION:
1998 vehicles built after May 13, 1998 (MDH 0513XX) are equipped with a passenger side air bag disconnect switch. This information can be used in
conjunction with the 1998 Wrangler Service Manual should problems with the switch be encountered. It contains the description of the system, removal
and installation information and the wiring schematics. A service manual revision is in process for the 1998 Wrangler Service Manual and will be
forthcoming.
PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG ON/OFF SWITCH
DESCRIPTION:
A passenger side air bag on/off switch, which is located on the forward end of the floor console allows the passenger side air bag system to be disabled
when certain child restraint devices are being used in the passenger seating position. The passenger side airbag on/off switch is equipped with a key
actuator so that the switch position can only be changed with the ignition key. When the ignition switch is in the ON or RUN position and the system is
disabled, a Light Emitting Diode (LED) illuminates an OFF indicator lamp on the face plate of the switch.
OPERATION:
To actuate the passenger side airbag on/off switch, insert the ignition key into the switch key actuator. The switch key actuator is then rotated with the
ignition key to its clockwise stop (the key actuator will be aligned with the OFF indicator lamp to disable the passenger side air bag system). When the
switch key actuator is rotated to its counterclockwise stop, (the key will be in the vertical position), the OFF indicator lamp will be extinguished and the
passenger side air bag system will be enabled.
