Engine Controls - False Misfire DTC's

TITLE: Misfire DTC's Linked to Flexplate Deviations

SERVICE TIP:
KMA has received reports of repeat occurrences of "false" misfire codes (i.e., no drivability problems exist, no actual misfire can be felt; in short, no
trouble is found) in A/T equipped Rio vehicles built before 12/1/00. Provided no other defects are found, these misfire DTC's may be linked to
deviations in the crank angle sensor ring on the flexplate.
Rio flexplates manufactured before 12/1/00 may have an uneven distribution of the cutouts or "windows" around the circumference of the sensor ring.
Since 12/1/00, flexplate manufacturing and inspection process has been improved to eliminate this condition. All current PDC stock are the improved
parts. The part number is unchanged (0K32B 19 020).
Always inspect the flexplate carefully and replace only if required. Before deciding to replace the flexplate, be sure to check for other possible causes for
misfire codes such as, engine mechanical condition (compression, vacuum, leak down and valve timing) and functions of fuel and ignition systems and
components.
