CONDITION
Some manual transaxle equipped models have a reoccurring problem of low idle rpm and/or stalling when coming to a stop. On 1995 - 1997 DOHC
vehicles, DTC's P0505 - Idle Control System Malfunction or P1797 - P or N Range Signal (A/T) or Clutch Pedal Position Switch (M/T) Open or
Short may also be present.
CAUSE
This condition could have a variety of causes so be sure to troubleshoot thoroughly. The most common causes for this problem are as follows:

A faulty clutch pedal position switch and/or related components.

The base idle adjustment may be out of specification.

The EGI harness that contains the wiring for the EGR components, IAC valve and TPS is routed over the transaxle and may be damaged causing a
short to ground.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
CAUTION
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ADJUST THE BASE IDLE USING THE FACTORY PRESET THROTTLE PLATE STOP SCREW. DAMAGE TO
THE VEHICLE COULD OCCUR.
1. Check the engine base idle adjustment.
Idle Speed: 750 + 50 RPM
NOTICE
When checking the base idle adjustment, always install a jumper wire in the underhood Data Link Connector between the ENGINE TEST and
GROUND terminals (G2 to pin 5).
2. Check for a damaged/chaffed EGI harness where the wire harness retainer attaches to the upper starter bolt. The wire harness retainer rubber
protector may be out of place and/or the harness may be installed too tight. Repair/reposition the retainer/harness as necessary.
3. Set the parking brake and turn the ignition switch to the ON position (engine OFF).
4. With the transaxle in gear and clutch pedal released, check for 12 volts at PCM terminal C248-17.
NOTICE
The transaxle must be in gear before checking PCM terminal C248-17 voltage (this opens the neutral position switch so that the signal from the
clutch pedal position switch can be checked).
