Piston Pin: Testing and Inspection

1. Inspect outer circumference of pistons for seizures or scoring. Replace if necessary.
2. Check piston rings for damage or abnormal wear.
3. Measure outer diameter of each piston at 90° angle to piston pin and 0.709 inch below oil ring land lower edge. Standard piston diameter is

3.3836-3.3844 inches.

4. Measure piston side clearance. Standard side clearance is 0.0019-0.0024 inch. Maximum side clearance is 0.006 inch.
5. If clearance exceeds maximum specifications, replace piston or rebore cylinders to fit oversized pistons.
6. Measure piston ring to land clearance around entire circumference of piston using new piston ring. Standard clearance is 0.001-0.003 inch with

maximum clearance of 0.006 inch.

7. Measure each piston ring end gap with feeler gauge. Top ring end gap should be 0.006-0.012 inch. Other ring end gap should be 0.008-0.014 inch.
8. Maximum piston ring end gap is 0.039 inch.
9. Measure piston pin hole diameter. Diameter should be 0.8657-0.8661 inch.

10. Measure piston pin diameter. Diameter should be 0.8651-0.8654 inch.
11. Subtract piston pin diameter from pin hole diameter to determine clearance. Clearance should be 0.0003-0.0009 inch.
12. If clearance exceeds specifications, replace piston and/or piston ring.
