Fluid - A/T: Testing and Inspection
AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF)
Level
Notice: Place the vehicle on a flat, level surface.
1. Apply the parking brake and position wheel chocks securely to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
2. Warm-up the engine until the ATF reaches 158°F - 176°F (70°C - 80°C).
3. While the engine is idling, shift the selector lever from P through L slowly, stopping at each range setting. Once at L, reverse the procedure,
shifting back to P.
4. Let the engine idle.
Notice: Do NOT overfill the automatic transmission. Doing so can cause a seal "blow out", loss of fluid, and damage to the transmission If you
overfill the transmission, you must drain the excess prior to driving the vehicle. The transmission will hold 7.08 quarts (6.7L) when completely
empty However, it is likely that there will be fluid left in the transmission after draining, especially if the front of the vehicle was raised to remove
the drain plug.
5. Remove the transmission oil dipstick (engine compartment, right side, rear), and ensure that the ATF level is in the HOT, (167°F [75°C]) range.
Add ATF to adjust the level as necessary.
ATF type: Dexron II E or M III
Caution: Use care when examining the ATF level, condition, or odor. The ATF with be very hot under normal operating conditions.
