Inspection
General
1. Visually inspect all parts for cracks, deformation, scoring of bearing surfaces, rust or corrosion, and other evidence of wear or damage.
Ball Nut
1. Install worm, piston, and valve assembly in vise with padded jaws.
2. Install dial gage as illustrated.
3. Establish the dimension shown, measuring from face of flange to end of worm.
4. Check radial movement of worm.
Maximum radial play: 0.008 inch (0.2 mm)
Adjusting Bolt Clearance
1. Assemble adjusting plate to adjusting bolt with beveled side of hole toward the round "head" (bearing surface) of the bolts.
2. Assemble the adjusting plate into the end of the sector shaft and pull upward on the adjusting bolt so that top of adjusting plate is against sector
shaft.
3. Using feeler gage, measure the clearance between the adjusting bolt and sector shaft as illustrated.
Maximum clearance: 0 - 0.002 inch (0 - 0.05 mm)
Notice: If clearance is greater than standard, replace the sector shaft.
Assembly
1. Place steering gear body in vise with padded jaws.
