Suspension Strut / Shock Absorber: Description and Operation
Front
Front Shock Absorber And Coil Spring Assembly
Each front shock absorber and coil spring is removed from the vehicle as a unit, held in a compressed state by upper and lower retainers. This
integrated assembly is mounted between a housing protruding upward on the front frame (referred to as a mounting block) and the lower control arm
assembly. The shock absorber is double acting, oil filled, and is mounted through the inside of the front cold spring and attached to the lower control
arm assembly by means of a 2-piece front fork. This front fork is attached to the shock absorber mounting base with four screws and nuts and is
secured to the lower control arm by means of a drop link.
The upper end of each shock absorber extends through the front coil spring retainer with insulators, insulator retainers and three nuts fastened to the
mounting block. The upper mounting block and the three nuts are located under the hood, protruding through a cut-out in the front inner fender well.
