Temperature Gauge: Description and Operation
Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge
The engine coolant temperature gauge in the instrument cluster indicates the temperature of the engine coolant with the ignition switch in the "ON"
position. A sending unit in the engine changes resistance with temperature. The engine temperature warning light is controlled by a temperature switch
by way of the ECM which senses engine coolant temperatures. When the ignition is in the "ON" position, a test circuit is closed by the ECM and the
light comes on to indicate the lamp is working properly. The coolant temperature indicator comes on at coolant temperatures above 259 °F (125 °C) and
off when the coolant temperature drops below 230 °F (110 °C).
