Steering Gear: Adjustments
Adjustment
1. Install assembled steering gear in vise having padded jaws.
2. Install torque wrench on end of worm shaft (pitman arm end of shaft).
3. While measuring torque required to turn the worm shaft, turn the adjusting screw as required to obtain required preload.
Wormshaft breakaway torque: 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm)
Notice: While adjusting preload, check that the torque required to turn the worm shaft is greater in the mid-range than at either extreme of shaft
rotation. The mid-range torque should be 31 inch lbs. (3.5 Nm) greater than that measured at either end of the motion.
4. Hold adjusting screw with screwdriver and tighten locknut.
Tighten locknut to 28 ft. lbs. (138 Nm).
5. Check preload torque again to make sure that adjustment did not change.
