Steering Wheel: Testing and Inspection
Steering Wheel Effort
1. With the vehicle on a hard level surface, place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
2. Start the engine and let run at idle speed.
NOTE: Do not hold the steering wheel full-left or full-right (against the stops) for more than 15 seconds. Prolonged operation in this condition is
harmful to the power steering pump.
3. Turn the steering wheel full-left and full-right several times to warm the power steering fluid.
4. Attach a pull scale to the outer end of the of the steering wheel spoke.
5. Pull the spring scale to rotate the wheel.
The pull must be applied to the steering wheel in a direction perpendicular to the radius of the steering wheel. If force is not applied correctly, the
spring scale will show a higher force than that actually required to turn the steering wheel.
6. Record the force required to rotate the steering wheel.
Required force: Less than 7.4 lbs. (33 N)
