Piston: Testing and Inspection
Piston to Bore Fitting
1. Inspect the outer circumferences of all pistons for seizure or scoring. Replace if necessary.
2. Measure the outer diameter of each piston at a right angle (90°) to the piston pin, 0.709 inch (18 mm) below the oil ring land lower edge.
Diameter
Standard: 3.3836-3.3844 inch (86.944-86.964 mm).
0.010 inch (0.25 mm) Oversize: 3.3935-3.3942 inch (86.194-86.214mm).
0.020 inch (0.50mm) Oversize: 3.4033-3.4041 inch (86.444-86.464 mm).
3. Check the piston-to-cylinder bore clearance.
Clearance: 0.0019-0.0024 inch (0.049-0.062 mm).
Maximum: 0.0059 inch (0.15 mm).
If the clearance exceeds the maximum, replace the piston or rebore the cylinders to fit oversize pistons.
NOTE: If the pistons are replaced, the piston rings must also be replaced.
