ENGINE LOSS OF POWER, HARD STARTING

Some Range Rover and Defender 110 and Defender 90 vehicles with 3.9/4.2 V8 engines have had complaints of engine loss of power and/or hard
starting.

The cause of this condition has been found to be due to failure of the current sensing circuit in the ignition control module, which is mounted on the side
of the distributor. The result is excessive primary current to the ignition coil. This excess current causes the coil to overheat and break down.

NOTE:

Failure to carry out the correct diagnostic procedure may result in warranty claims being rejected.

PARTS INFORMATION

NOTE:

Ignition Coils (part numbers PRC6574 and RTC5628) are interchangeable.

WORK PROCEDURE

Initial diagnostic checks must be performed using the hand held tester, engine analyzer and incorporating a fuel pump pressure check, to identify and
eliminate any other influencing factors prior to replacing the coil and ignition control module. Refer to fault diagnosis, pages 2 and 3 of Section 86 in the
Workshop Manual.

Check HT output of coil. No HT output, or output less than 15KV or, distributor dwell angle is greater than 15 degrees at idle, indicating that the current
control circuit has failed, replace both the ignition control module and the coil. Replace the 2 PIN module on the distributor, Part No. RTC5089, with 3
PIN module, Part No. STC1184. The 3 PIN module requires a link harness, Part No. STC1212, to adapt it to a 2 PIN application.

CARE POINT:
Remove the distributor cap to give a clear view of the module connections through the clear plastic cover. Ensure that the module connections do not
back out of the plastic molding during installation. Also, ensure that the female terminals within the blue connector are not widened and provide a good
