Measurement of Transmission Fluid Levels

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

SITUATION:

REQUIREMENT TO CHECK FLUID LEVELS IN HOT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS

In the shop environment, particularly when vehicles are undergoing routine service, it is not always possible to check the automatic transmission fluid
levels at the optimum "cold" condition.

RESOLUTION:

ALTERNATIVE HOT CONDITION MEASURING METHOD

When "cold" measurement of automatic transmission fluids is not possible and an accurate indicator of fluid level is required, utilize the alternative
measuring method outlined below. For a HOT transmission the MAXIMUM oil level indication is 19 mm (0.750 in.) above the MAXIMUM COLD
indictor on the dipstick.

CAUTION:

The HOT measurement level specified in this TIB is the MAXIMUM level allowable with a fully hot engine/gearbox.

Always check the transmission fluid level under either fully HOT conditions or fully COLD conditions.

DO NOT OVERFILL.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE

1.

Position the vehicle on a level surface with the parking brake applied and the transmission in Park.

2.

Apply the foot brake and start the engine.

WARNING:

Ensure that the foot brake is firmly applied during the following procedure.

NOTE:

Pause briefly (two to three seconds) in each gear position.

3.

With the foot brake still applied, move the shift lever slowly through each gear position starting from Park. (P-R-N-D-3-2-1).

4.

Return the shift lever to Neutral (N) and leave the engine running.
