Parking Brake Cable: Adjustments

Parking Brake Adjustment

Service Repair No - 70.40.11

NOTE: The parking brake should be fully operational on the third notch of ratchet.

1. Raise one rear wheel clear of the ground and support on axle stand. Release parking brake lever.
2. Tighten adjuster bolt until brake drum will not rotate by hand.
3. Tighten adjuster bolt to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) to fully expand shoes to drum.
4. Back off adjuster 1 1/2 turns, check that drum is free to rotate.

CAUTION: Cable adjustment must only be used for inital setting and to compensate for cable stretch. It must not be used to take up for brake shoe
wear, which must be adjusted at the brake drum.

5. Check operation of parking brake lever to give pawl 2 notches free movement on ratchet before being fully operational on third notch of ratchet.

Adjust parking brake accordingly if lever travel exceeds the above tolerance.
